A Croatian hiker experienced firsthand the loyalty and companionship of his Alaskan Malamute named North when they faced a challenging situation while mountain hiking with friends. While descending Mount Velebit along the Adriatic seacoast in Croatia, North started to slide on the icy path, causing the owner to fall roughly 500 feet. They waited for help to arrive in the dark, and despite dropping temperatures, North refused to leave his owner’s side. The Croatian Mountain Rescue Service was called around 6:30 p.m., and after a treacherous mission up the mountain, they found the pair cuddling for warmth at midnight. According to Total Croatia News, the mountaineer was accompanied by his loyal dog who kept him warm throughout the ordeal by snuggling up next to him in the pit. The dog’s body heat prevented the man from experiencing severe hypothermia. Eventually, rescue teams arrived and managed to bring both the man and his furry companion out of the pit on a stretcher. Despite being injured, the dog refused to leave its owner’s side and lay on top of him as they descended the mountain. The CMRS shared the heartwarming story on their Facebook page, highlighting the unbreakable bond between humans and dogs.

The hiker suffered a fracture in his lower leg and ankle after a fall, but his faithful dog remained unharmed. According to the rescue service’s social media account, the dog, named North, snuggled up to his owner and provided warmth with his body, even when the rescuers arrived. The rescue operation was challenging due to the snow, ice, and fallen tree limbs that blocked access to the location. Nonetheless, after 13 hours of guarding his injured master, North’s loyalty never wavered. The hiker was successfully transferred to medical professionals at approximately 8 a.m. the next day. The rescuers believe that this incident exemplifies how we should care for one another.
